Contraception

The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) who advise healthcare professionals, have recently changed the length of time the Mirena Intrauterine System or IUS can be used for. This is sometimes referred to as the ‘hormone coil’

They have extended the length of time if inserted at age <45 years for contraception to 6 years (previously was 5 years).

The Mirena can be used for 5 years as endometrial protection as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). (previously was 4 years)

That will mean that a lot of women who have had their coil fits prior to March of 2023 will be able to keep them for a year longer than was previously advised.

If you are not sure of the date of changeover/removal please contact us in the usual way.
